One of the most frequent species that we deal with is the Raccoon. The very distinct black facemask and black rings on the tail make them easy to recognize. Adults weigh between 10-20 lbs. We have caught many over 30+ lbs. They are very good with their hands, excellent climbers, have great strength for their size, and for these reasons raccoons can cause many problems.
Raccoons were mostly found around the Southern-Central Ontario area, but in rather recent years have been expanding their territory farther north. Populations are high especially in urban areas where they excel at living with humans. Local populations have risen after the drastic decline that occurred after the outbreak of raccoon rabies here in 1999. Problems associated with raccoons often come from them making there den sites in homes and buildings, to have their young and spend the cold winter months. They are omnivorous meaning they will eat anything. Also why they can become a nuisance in some situations. The latrines raccoons make also can be a health and structural concern.

Raccoon rabies has returned to Ontario so handling any raccoon is discouraged. Distemper is also a disease affecting raccoons. Raccoon roundworm is found in the feces of the animal and can affect humans, when the dried spores become airborne from disturbance. Roundworm is very prevalent in hot dry areas such as an attic or the mow of a barn. The health concerns associated with raccoons, the wide variety of problems they can cause and the many different solutions that are available make it best to consult a professional when dealing with them.
Raccoons are very adaptable and learn quickly. We see more and more problems from animals that have “broken” into a home, and then are either trapped and relocated or are just excluded from a house and have learned how to move into another home in a close proximity. These repeat offenders have then taught their young how to do the same, creating an epidemic in suburban areas. This is why we believe in lethally removing the problems animals. |
