There are 5 types of woodpeckers in Eastern Ontario that cause problems for people:
Downy woodpecker: the smallest of the woodpeckers. Downy’s have shorter beaks, black and white in colour and males have a red patch on the back of their head. These woodpeckers are very common at bird feeders in our area.
Hairy woodpecker: very similar to the downy woodpecker, it is larger in size and has a larger beak than the downy woodpecker.
Red Bellied woodpecker: roughly the same size as the hairy woodpecker, they don’t actually have a red belly at all but rather a red crest at the back of its head. It is the least common woodpecker in our area but also known to frequent bird feeders.
Northern Flicker woodpecker: slightly larger than the red bellied woodpecker. It is easily distinguished in flight by its bright white back side and yellow flashes from under its wings. This woodpecker in our area is most commonly seen on the ground searching for earthworms and ants.
Pileated woodpeckers: much larger than the other woodpeckers in our area. It is mostly black and has a large red crown of feathers on its head. This woodpecker is found in forested areas and field edges.
The most common complaint with woodpeckers is their territorial drumming. They will drum on trees, homes and TV/Internet antennas which can sometimes be loud and almost relentless. When they drum on homes they often are causing aesthetic damage to the home. Depending on the substrate used on the outside of the home they may also be feeding. When feeding the woodpeckers are pounding holes looking for insects.
There are three main ways to deal with woodpeckers including visual deterrents, exclusion, and removal. Visual deterrents and exclusions are the first options that are used to keep woodpeckers from returning to a specific area. The last option is removal. Removal can only be done if deterrents and exclusion have been completed first unsuccessfully. Woodpeckers are protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act.
