Skunks

The Striped skunk is Ontario’s only species of skunk. They are member of the weasel family. Skunks are very easy to distinguish and most Ontario residents are sure to recognize one. They weigh up to 8 lbs. and are in the general size range of a house cat. Skunks are black in colour with two whites stripes down their back. The white stripes can vary in size from skunk to skunk. They have longer, thin faces and long toenails that aid them in digging.

Skunks live almost everywhere in Ontario’s landscape and are definitely flourishing in urban areas due to availability of food and lack of predators. They are great at digging but will use man made objects to their advantage. Around and in old foundations and crawl spaces and under decks and sheds are the most common places that we see skunks that have become a nuisance. When a skunk finds a den site their foul smell is sure to follow, especially during breeding season. They benefit from garbage left out to feed on, but will also cause damage digging for grubs in lawns and preying on eggs or poultry if the right circumstances are provided.

Skunks are a carrier of rabies but most people do not have to worry about being directly affected by them. Your pets should be more of a concern. A direct spray from a skunk may also be extremely discomforting.

Skunks are not great climbers and therefore a wide variety of control methods can be used to successfully trap or exclude them from an area.
